The Shining Re-Cut Analysis

06:26

In the original trailer of The Shining, the way that it has been edited has made the genre of horror very obvious to the audience. The way that this has been done is by following the simple codes and conventions that are typical to horror films. The trailer started off with an oddly pitched voiceover and an aerial shot of a rural looking area, then there has been some non-diegetic sound effects added in to add tension to the atmosphere of the trailer. Almost immediately afterwards there is a shot of the main characters which could give the impression that he is going to become a negative character as he is related with the eerie non-diegetic music. The voiceover is then made clear that it is narrative about this particular character and about his ‘mental breakdown’. The character is then shown in a different, abnormal way as his looks mentally unstable and is walking around freely with weapons. This is when the cutting pace increases, as his sanity decreases. There are then flashes of him lashing out in rage but is juxtaposes with him denying he would never do any of this and is convinced he is mentally stable.
